Dear Members,

The Champagne party is now just a few hours away! We’re keeping fingers crossed for sunshine (forecast isn’t bad!).  If you haven’t got your tickets, what have you been doing?!? Contact Anne-Marie Rainsford at Jefferies for tickets…! (details attached).

We also wanted to bring to your attention that at our AGM, we made a change to the constitution to allow Trainee Solicitors to be Members. Membership is free – all we need are details! Although trainees won’t have voting rights, they will have access to everything else (and receive this bulletin!).  So why not invite your trainees to join? Send any details over to our treasurer/membership secretary – Aidan O’Donoghue at Tolhurst Fisher (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.)

Local Members Update

It is with regret that I inform you of John Brown’s death on 16th June following a long, stubborn and brave fight against cancer.  He was 68.  John was in practise on his own account in High Road, Benfleet and had been a partner in Twitchen Hook and Partners.

The funeral will take place on Monday 11th July at 3 pm at Woodlands Burial Park, Epping Forest, CM16 6AD.  If you wish to attend, drive to “The Burial Place”, park and then go to “The Gathering Hall”.  His widow, Tina, has asked that there be no flowers but a charitable donation to a charity of your choice may be made in John’s name.

Items for Sale!

Malcolm Worman is now all but retired.  He has Costs Law Reports 2010, 2011 and 2012 Services. These Law Reports, which are renowned in the costs world, are published by Class Legal and are all complete, in mint condition and are free to a good home.

He also has a number of the traditional framed caricatures of various Judges including Lord Denning, Lord Hailsham, Lady Justice Lane, Lord Havers, Lord Upjohn and Mr Justice Sachs plus a framed picture of the Carbolic Smokeball advertisement. He is willing to let these go for £85.00 if anybody is interested. These are likewise in excellent condition and might be of particular interest to a Solicitor who is about to branch out on his/her own. Contact Liz for Malcom’s contact details.

Conveyancing

There is a new search form for water authority searches.  There’s an additional question now in relation to hard water.

Parliamentary

Nothing much has happened in politics recently, other than these few things:

1 . The Country voted 52% to 48% to leave the European Union. The turnout was 71.8% with more than 30 million people voting. It was the highest turnout in a UK wide vote since the 992 general election.

2. The Prime Minister David Cameron resigned on Friday 24 Junc. The leadership race is heating up, but Boris Johnson is not standing (too much surprise).

3. Labour MPs have passed a vote of no confidence in Jeremy Corbyn, but he hasn’t resigned.

3. Nigel Farage has resigned as leader of UKIP.

General

The SBA have sent thanks for SOSDLS’s donation, following on from our AGM.  We attach their letter of thanks.

We attach the summary from the Law Society Council’s meetings in May, as well as the update from the CEO.

We do try and get everything right in this bulletin - but it is meant as an update only and we urge every member to make their own enquiries rather than rely definitively on something we've written. If you do require clarification, then feel free to email us and we'll be happy to try and help.
